Barbara Kenney Fortenbaugh

d. September 4, 2021

Barbara was born November 4th, 1941 in Syracuse, NY to the late Dr. Chauncey W Kenney and Dorothy (Stark) Kenney. Barbara spent her summer days at Camp Quinibeck, in Vermont. At Syracuse University, she joined Gamma Phi Beta and eventually worked as director for the sorority's camp in Vancouver, B.C. for underprivileged children. Upon graduation, she moved to Long Island to be an elementary school PE teacher. In 1964, she met the love of her life at a party. That chance meeting led to a marriage of 56 years, two children, one grandchild and many years of happy travels. Barbara's life was one of service. She served in the school PTA and as a Girl Scout leader but her true calling was Trinity United Methodist Church. Affectionately known as “The Church Lady”, she was the heartbeat of the church. She worked quietly behind the scenes never expecting anything in return, often arriving early and staying late. It was often said, if you need Barbara, just stand still and she'll eventually pass by. When she was out of town, it took at least five people to make sure the church work continued seamlessly. She loved her work so much that she gave Bob the “Two Sunday Rule” for travel—she would only miss two Sundays in a row. She and Bob loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit 50 countries. Their favorite was a Christmas/New Year's Eve riverboat cruise between Nuremberg and Budapest. They enjoyed meeting new people and have several fellow travelers with whom they travelled again and maintain contact. Their other passion was playing bridge with two groups, one of them for 40 years Above all, the love for her family shined through as she made sure they were well-fed, appropriately dressed, and got them where they needed to be—on time. As their #1 cheerleader, she faithfully attended countless sports games, piano recitals, and band concerts. Celebrating her children's birthdays and holidays with the family brought her much joy. She also loved being Nana and delighted in watching her grandson grow into the wonderful young man he has become. Known for her beautiful smile and joyful disposition, she was loved by many and will be missed. We take comfort in knowing that she is now safe in the arms of the Lord. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and sister Nancy (Kenney) Hick. Barbara is survived by her husband Bob of 56 years; son, Peter Fortenbaugh and wife Jill; daughter, Debbie Hatfield and husband Jeff; and grandson Cameron Fortenbaugh. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Arlington, TX endowment Fund. Livestream link: https://trinityumcarl.online.church/
