Barbara Ann Hughes

July 2, 1933 — May 23, 2024

Barbara Ann Hughes was born July 2, 1933, to John and Myrtle McNair in Capps, Arkansas. She grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma where she met the love of her life, W.L. Hughes, Jr. on a blind date. They married in 1955 and enjoyed 59 years together before Bill’s death in 2015. They had one son, William Lee Hughes, III.

Barbara worked for TEA in Austin, Texas before moving to Arlington in 1956. She was a flight attendant for Central Airlines, worked at Arlington Memorial Hospital, and Arlington ISD. After graduating from Texas Wesleyan College, Barb landed her dream job as a 4th grade teacher at Blanton Elementary School where she taught for over 25 years. She was respected by her fellow teachers and loved dearly by her students.

Barbara was active in several professional organizations including TSTA, NEA, and Delta Cappa Gamma, to name a few. She was also involved in the community with various organizations, and UTA. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, where she served on multiple committees and was always known for her delicious cookies and cakes.

Barb was beautiful, kind, creative, and very much loved. She found joy in reading, cooking, painting, traveling, and going to ballgames. She especially enjoyed sitting out on the patio, margarita in hand, watching the grandchildren and great grandchildren swim.

Barb is survived by her son, Bill Hughes, and his wife Beth; grandsons Travis and wife Sarah, Reid and wife Cat, and Patrick and wife Gillian; great grandsons Grayson, Mack, Everett, and Brooks Hughes; beloved sister-in-law Helen Schrickel; 3 nieces and a nephew.

The family would like to thank Meadowbrook Memory Care, Texas Life Hospice, Comfort Keepers, Care of Excellence Home Health Care, and Gabby Carrasco. We will be forever grateful to all of these amazing nurses, caregivers, and staff for their love and kindness shown not only to Barbara, but to our entire family.
