Obituary

Rozella Adella VanReenan was born to Gottfried and Mollie Stricker in Russell County Kansas on February 9, 1919.
She was the eldest of 14 children. In 1945 she married Lake VanReenan and was divorced in 1962.
Rozella attended Ft. Hays Kansas State to earn her teaching certificate and later completed her education with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Midwestern University in Texas. Her career spanned 40 years teaching in elementary schools in Russell, KS, Burkburnett, TX and Salina, KS.
Rozella was president of her local AARP chapter and of the Kansas Retired Teachers Association.
She was also a member of K-NEA, Retired Senior Volunteer Persons, Red Hat Society, American Society of Germans from Russia and St. John’s Lutheran Church of Salina, KS.
After her retirement she spent her time volunteer tutoring, delivering Meals on Wheels, gardening, traveling, attending plays, concerts, and community events.
In 2012, Rozella moved to the Waterford in Pantego to be near her only child, Dixie Hoover. There, she participated in many activities. She especially enjoyed leading singing in the church services and organized a monthly “sing along” for the residents.
Rozella celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family at the Waterford on February 9, 2019.
She succumbed to pneumonia while in Arlington Memorial Hospital on May 13, 2019.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by siblings, Helen Michaelis, Harvey Stricker, and Gottfried Stricker Jr.
Rozella was greatly loved and admired and will be sorely missed.

Memorial Service: 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Waterford at Pantego.
Memorials: In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice – especially those fostering education.

I met Rozella the year she moved in at the Waterford and instantly fell in love with her. She was like a whirlwind of red hair and big smiles. Rozella was a lady that almost instantly made you want to hear the wonderful stories of her life and career. When I began doing her taxes I had the privilege of being able to spent one on one time with her. Sometimes our conversations took place at Braums and the last few times in her apartment. I held her in the highest regard and my respect for her was unlimited. Rather than just another tax client, Rozella was a dear person I have the utmost respect for and I am so glad she called me her friend. My condolences to Dixie and the rest of Rozella's family.
